Obesity Social And Economic Implications - 1362 Words
Obesity is an increasingly large problem in the entire world today. Not only in America, but weight is increasing across the globe. There are major health, social and economic implications that impact us all, not just those that are overweight. If you just look around, wherever you are, you typically see quite a few people who are obese or morbidly obese. It is a sad but true fact in todayââ¬â¢s society. These children are affected in schools throughout the country. Other children who are in average weight ranges tend to bully, pick on, teased, and terrorized the heavier children. Children can be very mean no matter the situation, some will do whatever it takes to find a way to harass you. Those that were overweight from high school on were not as likely to have had any more education, like college after they graduated. Overweight individuals have a lower average income than those that are normal weights. They were also 50% more likely to not have a job, be getting welfare, like food stamps, and free housing and not have a husband or wife. Being obese or morbidly obese is very dangerous for oneââ¬â¢s health. They are more likely to have Type II Diabetes, are at risk for stroke, heart disease and high blood pressure. When the body mass index, or BMI gets higher, the risks for health problems gets higher too. Coronary Heart Disease is when plaque build up in side the coronary arteries. This can reduce the blood flow the the heart and this is very dangerous. This can also cause a stroke and a stroke can cause life-long disabilities or even kill you. People who are on the heavier side tend to have problems sleeping at night, that is called having sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder in which the breathing is repeatedly stopped and started. Itââ¬â¢s very dangerous because when it stops if it takes too long to start back up again you may pass away in your sleep. With the correct treatments you could live a long life.
